First Aid Interventions for Thermal Burns
Objective: Stop the burning process. The first thing to do is to smother the flames by:
- Having the client lie in a horizontal position as this permits flames to burn up and away from the exposed parts of the body. Standing should be discouraged because of the greater chance of flames being inhaled.
- A rug, coat, or blanket should be thrown over the client to shut off the oxygen supply to the flame. Water may also be thrown over him or he may be rolled onto the ground.
- Once flames are controlled and before transporting the client to the hospital, the clothing should be pulled off, provided it is not stuck to the skin.
- Body is covered with a clean sheet to prevent contamination of the burned area
