Disease Affecting the Integumentary System – Herpes Zoster

Important Information

  • Caused by the same virus hat causes chickenpox.
  • A dormant type of chickenpox
  • More often attacks adults rather than children

AKA: s hingles, zora; acute posterior ganglionitis

Causative Agent:  same as chickenpox, varicella zoster virus

Mode of Transmission:  droplets

Signs and Symptoms: maculo-papula rashes

  • unilateral: follow the course of the peripheral nerves
  • very painful
  • appear in clusters

Management:
Medical care -  Zovirax
Potassium permanganate compress (ABO)
A- astringent affect
B- bactericidal effect
O – oxidizing effect (deodorize the rash)

Nursing care:  same as chickenpox
