Gullas Medical Center
The Gullas Medical Center is a 4-storey building 100-Bed Tertiary Care Hospital that serves as the university hospital of the University of the Visayas. It was named in honor of Don Vicente Gullas, the beloved founder of the University of the Visayas originally called Visayan Institute in 1919. The Gullas Memorial Hospital is accredited by PhilHealth and is open to public. The hospital especially caters poor to average Filipinos, which is similarly the market catered by the University as originally envisioned by its founder. Incidentally because of which, the university also offers special scholarship programs to poor but deserving students.
The Gullas Medical Center do not actually pertain to the hospital in the University of Visayas. It actually refers to the whole compound of buildings which included the Vicente Gullas Memorial Hospital, the Gullas College of Medicine, the UV College of Nursing, the Gullas College of Dentistry, the Tan Kim Ching Cancer Center and the Cosmetic Surgery Center. The Gullas Medical Center and the College of Medicine were originally opened in Banilad in 1994.
Gullas Medical Center recently underwent a multimillion renovation in order to improve the building infrastructure, facilities and equipment of the hospital. The center was then inaugurated its 117th birth anniversary. Apart from the complete façade make over of the edifice, the renovation also featured that opening the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Cosmetic surgery center in line with the country’s aims toward Medical Tourism. Moreover, the hospital has also upgraded many of its facilities and equipment in order to abreast itself with modern medical and technological trends and make the institution at par with leading hospitals in Cebu and the Philippines.
Meanwhile, because of its continuing commitment to providing quality education and exemplary performance in instruction, research and public service, the University of Visayas was granted a deregulated status by the Commission of Higher Education.
