Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC)

Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) was the fulfillment of Cardinal Rufino Santos’ vision of creating a center that relied on the five fundamental values, that up to now still holds true to the heart of its staff. CSMC’s competitive edge and core strength were birthed in the trial of adversity. In its early incarnation, the Maryknoll sisters founded the hospital as the St. Paul’s Hospital of Manila. When heavy American artillery damaged it during the liberation of the capital during the Second World War, the U.S. War damaged commission awarded recompense to the nuns. A portion of the fund was used to purchase a 3.7 hectare property in what would become the Greenhills West Subdivision of the Ortigas Company Limited. A new version of St. Paul’s was designed and architectural blueprints were laid out. However, the plans were beset by rising costs and post war inflation. The Archdiocese of Manila, headed by then Archbishop Rufino Cardinal Santos, granted assistance to the Sisters. Soon, business realities facilitated the complete transfer of the property and the project to the Archdiocese. The hospital eventually opened its doors in August of 1974. Cardinal Santos had passed away by then. Not long after, the hospital’s Medical Director proposed that St. Paul’s be named in his honor. The proposal was met with unanimous approval. Following tremendous public response, Cardinal Santos became one of the country’s top major medical centers in five years. In 1986, trials— fires on separate occasions that crippled power in the hospital and grilled the newly constructed sixth floor, and labor unrest—threaten to waylay the hospitals success. But the swift and decisive move of the Archdiocese to enter unto a joint Apostolate with the Hospital Managers Incorporated in 1988 now on its 15th year led to the effective resolution of the crucial labor issues by the new management team resulting in revitalized operations and the expansion of the institution’s facilities. It is this that eventually led to the hospital’s transformation into a leader in the country’s medical industry today. With the present management of the HMI Cardinal Santos Medical Center continues to soar high not only to be at par with other medical centers but the best in the land. All that you see today in CSMC is their promise to give you the best in quality care. Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) has taken the lead role in providing you the best in diagnostics, round the clock caring and setting the standards by continuously acquiring the latest medical technology and introducing the best medical technology in the country.
