Passing the interview is a critical step in getting a job. The interview is the first time one gets to personally encounter one’s potential employer. First thing’s first. Before you start talking for the interviewer to know your thoughts more in depth, the interviewer will see first. Hence, one’s appearance is the first thing that creates the initial yet lasting impression that the interviewer will have with you. As such, the interviewee should dress up casually and conservatively to make the right first impression. This means avoiding skimpy outfits, limiting accessories and keeping oneself clean, trimmed and neat. Included in one’s outfit is to smell good by maintaining a good hygiene and avoid smelling like cigarettes.

Time is gold especially in business. The interviewee should never be late. It is always better to arrive early than late. Arriving early allows one to adapt to the environment, prepare oneself by fixing oneself and doing some personal necessities so that one’s gets more comfortable before the interview. If warranted, one can read company newsletters and other reading materials while waiting to learn more about the company, its mission, vision, direction, culture, values and other activities, which one can also use to one’s advantage during the interview.

Professionalism is important during the interview no matter how casual the interviewer approaches you. This means maintaining courtesy and kindness at all times. Keeping your manners when talking to any employee, sitting up straight, addressing everyone as madam or sir, focusing on the interview by not entertaining calls (turn your cell phone off), smiling and maintaining eye contact to show sincerity, and always listening carefully.

The question and answer per se is the meat of the interview. The interviewee should be prepared to answer questions by preparing in advance right answers for typical questions like describing yourself, describing one’s professional experience and its relevance to the job. There are really no wrong or right answers in the interview but it is important that one creates a positive impression to persuade the interviewer that you are the right person for the job. Always provide positive answer. Do not say bad things about your previous employer.
In describing your weakness for instance, you do not necessarily have to tell your flaws directly but it should be structured in a way that you are currently working on to overcome your weakness. In selling yourself, one should remain truthful or honest. Good interviewers have the knack to detect inconsistencies in your answers.

As a rule, focus on what you can do for the company and not on what you can get out of it. Wait for the interviewer to close the interview. You will also be given a chance to ask questions so do not hesitate to ask intelligent and relevant questions. Finally, thank the interviewer for their time.
