Tips for Giving Medications to Children

Oral Medications
1.  Liquid forms are preferable because they are easier to swallow
2.  When giving drugs to infants and very young children, the dropper sould be placed on the side of the mouth along the cheek to prevent aspiration.
3. Juice or carbonated beverages may be give after giving a drug to reduce nausea
4.  A syringe is the most accurate device for preparing liquid dosages, especially those less than 10 ml; cups teaspooons or droppers are inaccurate.
1.  A sleeping child should be awakened before giving an injection
2.  Distracting a child by talking or giving a toy can reduce pain preception.
